Things to do near Holmfirth


We are just a mile from Holmfirth where we are spoilt for choice when it comes to individual shops, cafés, restaurants and galleries. This beautiful small town is famous for the BBC series Last of the Summer Wine which was filmed on the caravan park several times during its heyday in the 1990s. There is always plenty going, visit Holmfirth Events to find out what our vibrant town has to offer. The Picturedrome in the centre of Holmfirth has well known and famous bands performing regularly. Why not stay an extra night and make it a weekend break?

With so much for all ages to see and do in the area, no one will be bored! Within 30 minutes drive are Eureka! (The National Children’s Museum,) Yorkshire Sculpture ParkCannon Hall and FarmKirklees Light RailwayThe National Mining MuseumHepworth Gallery (voted in the top 50 galleries of the world by The Times) and more.

For the adventurous this is a paradise for walkers, horse riders and cyclists. Along with an abundance of beautiful countryside, we are lucky to be close to several reservoirs each of them enjoying stunning views. National Trust’s Marsden Moor Estate, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest is just a 20 minute drive away. If you prefer to explore the surrounding area at a faster pace, there are several canal towpaths, ideal for cycling, in Marsden, Slaithwaite, Milnsbridge and Golcar or join part of National Cycle Route 68 between Holmfirth and Marsden. For a real challenge head up Holme Moss, 525m above sea level with breathtaking views, part of The Tour de France route for 2014. Can you beat 6 minutes 30 seconds set by local cycling legend Brian Robinson who was the first Briton to complete the Tour de France?

After all the physical exertion, be sure to reward yourself with a pint of local ale at one of the award winning pubs or breweries in the area or if coffee and cake is more your ‘cup of tea’, we are spoilt for choice for cafés among the rural villages in the area. Not only does The Cider Press, a fantastic café and shop just a 30 minute scenic walk from the park, produce delicious cider and apple juice, its cake is out of this world! Or if you enjoy a craft beer, a visit to Summer Wine Brewery Taps enables you to sample their fantastic beers in the brewery itself and it's only a 25 minute walk away. If you see yourself as a bit of a ‘foodie’, make sure you visit our fantastic farm shops and cafés in the Valley. Start with a wedge of the best of Yorkshire cheese like ‘Barncliffe Brie’ and homemade bread from Thorncliffe Farm Shop then finish off with tasty award winning Yummy Yorkshire Ice Cream (while in Yorkshire go for their Yorkshire Pudding, gravy and cranberry sauce flavour!) at Delph House Farm. And if you’re still peckish pick your own summer fruits at Bentley Grange. Don’t forget Holme Valley is also home to Longley Farm and you can sample their delicious produce at the Longley Farm Cafe in Holmfirth. You can even go wine tasting at Holmfirth Vineyard and enjoy food sourced from some of Yorkshire’s finest producers.
